Thursday, May 1, 2025
Leader: Fraser Gibson 519 576 9287 or fn.gib@sympatico.ca
Meeting Time/Location: 8:00 pm. Meet near 764 Cedar Bend Drive, Waterloo at the TRAIL ENTRANCE at the back of the LCNC property (street parking available).
Duration: 1.5–2 hours
Description: Experience the Voices of the Night as we focus on American Woodcock, but also listen for and identify amphibian and possibly owl calls. In April and early May the American Woodcock partakes in an interesting flight and sound mating display. The old fields at Laurel have been favoured by this species in the past, so hopefully this late evening ritual will again be observed. The nearby wetlands should provide the habitat necessary for a variety of singing amphibians and the woodlands are known to be home territory for owls.
Trails: The majority of our walk will be on trails or narrow pathways with some wet sections and some uneven terrain.
Dress/equipment: Dress warmly for some walking and plenty of standing quietly! The trail is likely to be wet/maybe muddy in some places so waterproof boots of some kind would likely be best. Bring binoculars and a flashlight.
Registration is required
Non-members are welcome. All participants will need to sign an insurance waiver.
