Lakeside Bird Walk and Junco Sketch Sesh for World Migratory Bird Day
POSTPONED from Oct 11 to Oct 13. For the autumn World Migratory Bird Day join Meredith, Bird Friendly Kitchener’s co-chair and local artist on October 13th to chat about the seasonal departures of our migrating birds such as warblers and shorebirds and the celebrate the arrival of our official city bird, the dark-eyed junco! Learn who sticks around all year long and who migrates in to spend the longer colder months with us.
We’ll take a little stroll along Lakeside’s paved trail then sit for a guided sketch of our best bird, the junco! while chatting about making Kitchener a bird friendly city. Lakeside is Meredith’s favourite birding spot in DTK and was where she went to spend time with many of the birds she drew for her daily series of all our regional birds in 2023.
Cameras, binoculars and questions are more than welcome! Sketching materials will be provided but you are welcome to bring your own. *NO* drawing experience is necessary, all juncos will be celebrated and loved.
Spaces are limited to 20 spots. Register on the BFCK website at: Urban Bird Walk for October 11th World Migratory Bird Day. Meet at Lakeside’s parking lot at 140 Lakeside Dr. (playground parking lot) for 8:50AM to start our walk at 9AM.
World Migratory Bird Day is officially celebrated on the second Saturday in May (May 10th in 2025, when BFK was in Square Peg in DTK) as migratory birds journey to nesting sites and on the second Saturday in October (October 11th in 2025) as they return to wintering areas. Because birds do not all migrate at the same time and to provide the opportunity to observe birds on stopover sites as they journey, however, we encourage you to celebrate when the timing is best at your location.
Every day is Bird Day!
