SpruceHaven Nature Inventory Blitz Oct 10 8am-10am
Saturday, October 10 @ 8:00 am - 10:00 am
Waterloo Region Nature invites you to help inventory the biodiversity at SpruceHaven. We are calling this a bioblitz but it’s somewhat less formal than that. While we want a good list of what lives at SpruceHaven, this activity is equally about providing our members an opportunity to get outside and explore somewhere new during these tough times of physical distancing.
Join us as a citizen scientist on October 10 or 11th for the first of four blitzs (one each season). Each blitz will be over two days and participants are asked to sign-up in advance for two hour time slots to allow for limited parking and appropriate physical distancing while on site. You do not have to stay for the entire two hours. You can also sign up for multiple time slots if you desire. The blitz will be held between 8AM and 4PM.
If you don’t already have an iNaturalist account, it’s easy to create one at iNaturalist.ca. You just need an email address, and then pick a username (with no spaces), and a password. There is a Getting Started Guide available. The iNaturalist project for this event is SpruceHaven Nature Inventory Blitz (Fall). There are iNaturalist apps available for Android and iPhone. You can also upload photos from your camera using your home computer.
And if you don’t have an eBird account, it’s easy to create one at eBird Canada. You just need an email address, a username and a password. The eBird app is available for Android and iPhone. You can also submit checklists through your home computer.
This blitz will focus on migratory birds, vascular plants and fungi (though you are welcome to document anything you find). All observations need to be submitted to either iNaturalist or eBird. If you cannot join us in person you can still help as an identifier on iNaturalist! For observations to count in this blitz they need two additional verifications. Please, lend us your expertise!
Please park behind the large red barn in the open grassy area to limit traffic congestion on the road. A WRN board member will be there for you to check in and check out. If you aren’t a WRN member, please take a moment to complete the waiver form before venturing on.
