Description:    Normally I run this outing during the cold weather months when Lake Ontario hosts a huge concentration of wintering waterfowl, but there is much to be observed during the summer.

We will begin at the DesJardins Canal in Dundas where several species might be nesting, with the possibility of Carolina Wren alongside the canal or in the adjacent Urquart Butterfly Gardens. The floral display there will be magnificent and butterflies aplenty should be seen.

We will check in at Woodland Cemetery to see whether the Eastern Screech Owls are cooperating, and move down to Grindstone Creek where Caspian and Common Terns should put on an aerial display for us, with Great Blue Herons, Green Herons, Belted Kingfisher, swans and ducks present, with up to four species of swallow hawking for insects. A short foray into Hendrie Valley Sanctuary generally yields a pleasing selection of passerines.

We will then go to LaSalle Park and Marina for gulls, ducks, swans, and migrant and resident songbirds along the woodland trail. We will probably have lunch at this location.

Next stop will be at Paletta Park in Burlington where the path through the woodlot may deliver surprises. Once I had a White-eyed Vireo here.

Then we will go to Bronte Harbour in Oakville for Red-necked Grebe, Double-crested Cormorants, gulls, terns, Cliff Swallows and the possibility of Fish Crow.

We will end the day with a visit to Lakefront Promenade in Mississauga for gulls, terns, grebes and passerines.

There is no shortage of washroom stops along this route

This is a full day’s outing so be sure to pack a lunch and snacks if you need them. Dress according to the weather, bring binoculars, a scope if you have one, a field guide and lots of enthusiasm.

Registration is required. Please contact David to register. Non-members are welcome but they will need to sign an insurance waiver.
