Topic: Monitoring Salamanders in Urban Environments
The network for forests, vernal pools, and wetland systems within the City of Kitchener provide habitat for a variety of salamander species. Although rarely seen, salamanders often make up a large portion of a healthy forests biomass and are an indicator of forest health. These creatures currently face a variety of threats including habitat loss and degradation, climate change, foreign pathogens, and invasive species but in many cases little data is available to inform protection and recovery efforts. This talk will share experiences and results from over 10 years of monitoring salamanders in the City.
