How to Use eBird and Merlin

Thursday, May 15 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

New to birding? Looking to learn and find more species in the Waterloo Region? Come and join us for an introduction to two free apps, eBird and Merlin. You will need a smartphone with data to access the functions on these two apps.

We will show you the basic functions of how these apps can also work together. After a demonstration, we will walk around Huron Natural Area to test out the sound recognition on Merlin and log findings on eBird.

You do not need any prior experience with birding or using these apps.

Difficulty: Light to moderate – there are sections of flat boardwalk and most of the trails are groomed but we will also be taking dirt trails with uneven surfaces and hilly portions. We will be walking at a slow to moderate pace and will be standing for short periods of time to gather data.
White-breasted Nuthatch
Registration is required. This outing is limited to 10 participants only. All participants will be required to sign a waiver form.

This is the first of two dates for this outing, to allow more people to enjoy. A rain date of June 12 is also marked, in case one session is rained out.

Washrooms should be available at the parking lot (ground level), where we will convene at 5:30.

We’ll likely see (and hear) a variety of birds – songbirds, herons, woodpeckers, ducks, geese…

You will want to bring: Water, cellphone with data access, binoculars (optional), comfortable hiking shoes, and bug repellant.
